Brief presentation of our NGO: "Emeis kai o Kosmos/Nuestro Mundo" is a NGO
created by a group of young people under 30 in Heraklion, Crete, Greece.
The Cretan society due to its geographical insularity, close mentality and
traditional norms often doesn't offer many opportunities to young people
neither to innovate nor to think and act as global citizens. Our NGO
wishes to operate as a youth actor of positive change by linking local to
global issues and by focusing on the environmental and social plurality
and importance of rural world.
Regular activities: running of campaigns and education programs on
critical and ethical consumption, commercialization of fair trade products
and local bio-products, participation in ecofestivals and cultural events
(particularly in urban areas in Crete), youth exchanges, use of new
technologies and arts as tools for communication, environmental and social
awareness-raising, offering internships to students in collaboration with
the University of Crete, etc.
Collaborations: Our NGO is a member of the cooperative "Koukoutsi" in
Heraklion. The cooperative "Koukoutsi" represents a common initiative of a
Cretan informal network of bioproducers, craftsmen and other community
groups. "Koukoutsi" maintains a social center where bioproducts and
handcrafts are sold and seminars about several informal learning issues
are organized (such as seminars about eco-crafts, healthy and traditional
food, etc). Members of our NGO have also created the artistic laboratory
"Kiklo" which produces artistic pieces from recycled and natural
materials. "Kiklo" has also an active presence in the "Koukoutsi" social
center.
Our NGO is also member of the coordination team of the International Fair
Trade Action Network. It maintains a solid collaboration with the "Terra
Verde Fair Trade Organization" of the Social Center for Immigrants in
Chania, Crete; the "Sporos" fair trade cooperative in Athens; the Italian
Association of World Shops; the social cooperative "Libero Mondo" in Italy
and the University of Crete, Greece.
Fields of interest for European collaboration: We are particularly
interested to develop collaborations with other European organizations on
the following topics:
Global education
Environment
Fair trade/Ethical consumption
Arts/Handcrafts
Social use of new technologies
